Dust on the furniture and a stuffy house point back to the system
If you dust on Monday and the shelves are gray again by Thursday, the air is carrying more than your filter catches. A standard thin filter stops large debris. Fine dust, pollen and pet dander pass through, settle on the evaporator coil and ride the ductwork back into the rooms, which is why allergy symptoms can feel worse indoors.
Houston-area humidity makes it worse. A damp coil and drain pan are a place for mildew to start, and the musty smell when the air conditioner kicks on is the system telling you something is growing. Tight, well-insulated houses also hold stale air longer, so the same dust cycles through again and again.
